Storing a recreational vehicle or boat in the off-season? Here's how to prepare and what to look for in a storage facility.
Ontario's boating and camping season may be short, but your RV or boat still needs a safe place to spend the winter months. Proper preparation and the right storage facility protect your investment until you're ready to hit the road or water again.
Preparing Your RV for Storage
- Drain all water systems — including fresh water tanks, water lines, and the water heater
- Clean thoroughly — interior and exterior, removing all food items
- Add fuel stabilizer and run the engine briefly to circulate it
- Disconnect the battery or use a trickle charger
- Cover tire contact points if storing on pavement for extended periods
- Cover vents and openings to prevent pests from entering
Preparing Your Boat for Storage
- Flush the engine with fresh water
- Change the oil and lower-unit lubricant
- Drain fuel or add stabilizer
- Remove the battery and store it in a warm, dry place
- Cover with a fitted boat cover or shrink wrap
Choosing a Storage Facility
Look for a facility that offers:
- Drive-up access for easy loading and unloading
- Gated entry with individual tenant access codes
- Video surveillance for added security
