Organizing Your Storage Unit for Easy Access

A well-organized storage unit means you can find what you need without unpacking everything. Here's how to set one up.

There's nothing worse than needing something from your storage unit and having no idea which box it's in — buried under a dozen other containers. A little organization upfront saves hours of frustration later.

The Aisle Strategy

Always leave a clear path from the door to the back of your unit. Even a narrow walkway makes a huge difference. Place frequently accessed items along this aisle.

Zone Your Unit

Think of your unit like rooms in a house:

  • Front zone — items you need regularly (seasonal clothing, sports gear, documents)
  • Middle zone — occasionally needed items (holiday decorations, camping equipment)
  • Back zone — long-term storage (furniture, keepsakes, archived files)

Shelving Makes a Difference

Metal shelving units transform a storage unit. They keep boxes off the floor, maximize vertical space, and let you see labels at a glance. We carry shelving-friendly boxes and supplies in our office.

Label Everything

Go beyond "kitchen" or "bedroom." Be specific:

  • "Kitchen — pots and pans"
  • "Kids' room — winter clothes, size 8"
  • "Garage — power tools"

Use a consistent labelling system and keep a master list at home or on your phone.

Use Clear Bins for Essentials

For items you might need on short notice, use clear plastic bins. You can see the contents without opening each one. Reserve cardboard boxes for items you won't touch for months.

Review Annually

Once a year, visit your unit and reassess. Pull out items you no longer need, reorganize what's left, and update your inventory. Your future self will thank you.
