How to Pack a Storage Unit Efficiently
Make the most of your storage space with these practical packing strategies that keep your belongings safe and accessible.
Renting a storage unit is only half the battle — how you pack it determines whether you'll enjoy easy access or dread every visit. A well-organized unit saves you time, protects your items, and can even let you rent a smaller (and cheaper) space.
Start with a Plan
Before you load a single box, sketch a simple floor plan. Place items you'll need frequently near the front, and stack heavier boxes on the bottom. Leave a narrow aisle down the centre so you can reach everything without unloading the entire unit.
Use Uniform Boxes
Standard-sized boxes stack neatly and distribute weight evenly. Avoid overpacking — if you can't lift a box comfortably, it's too heavy. Label every box on multiple sides with its contents and the room it came from.
Protect Your Belongings
- Wrap furniture in moving blankets or plastic covers
- Use bubble wrap for fragile items
- Place mattresses in protective covers
- Elevate items off the floor with pallets or shelving units
Maximize Vertical Space
Stack boxes floor to ceiling, heaviest on the bottom. Disassemble furniture like bed frames and table legs to save space. Store sofas and mattresses vertically along the walls.
