Decluttering Your Home Before Renting Storage
Don't pay to store things you don't need. Declutter first and you'll save money on a smaller unit.
Storage units are incredibly useful — but they're not a substitute for decluttering. Before you rent, take time to sort through your belongings. You'll likely end up with a smaller unit and a lower monthly bill.
The Four-Box Method
As you go through each room, sort items into four categories:
- Keep — items you use regularly or have genuine sentimental value
- Store — seasonal, occasional, or transitional items for your unit
- Donate — good condition items someone else can use
- Discard — broken, expired, or truly unwanted items
Questions to Ask Yourself
For each item you're unsure about:
- Have I used this in the past year?
- Would I buy this again today?
- Does this item serve a purpose in my current life?
- Is the sentimental value worth the storage cost?

The 30-Day Rule
If you're on the fence about an item, box it up and mark the date. If you haven't needed it in 30 days, it's a strong candidate for donation or disposal.
Once you've decluttered, visit us to discuss unit sizes. Our staff can help you estimate how much space you'll actually need — many customers are surprised they can go smaller than they expected.
