Choosing the Right Lock for Your Storage Unit

Not all padlocks are created equal. Here's what to look for when securing your storage unit.

Your storage unit lock is the last line of defence for your belongings. While our facility is fully fenced with video surveillance and controlled gate access, choosing a quality lock is essential for peace of mind.

Types of Locks We Recommend

Disc Locks

Disc locks (also called round padlocks) are the most popular choice for storage units. Their rounded shape makes them difficult to cut with bolt cutters, and the shackle is mostly hidden within the lock body.

Heavy-Duty Padlocks

A good padlock should have a hardened steel shackle at least 3/8 inch thick. Look for locks rated for outdoor use with weather-resistant coatings to prevent rust.

What to Avoid

  • Cheap combination locks — easily picked and often made with soft metal
  • Luggage-style locks — too small and weak for storage unit hasps
  • Locks with exposed shackles — easier targets for bolt cutters

Lock Maintenance

Check your lock periodically for rust or stiffness, especially after winter. A drop of lubricant on the keyway and shackle keeps it working smoothly. If your lock seizes, our office carries replacement locks so you're never stuck outside your unit.

We Sell Locks On-Site
